Kumbh Mela: The Largest Gathering on Earth

4 min read

When the devas and asuras churned the cosmic ocean, a few drops of amrit, the nectar of immortality, fell at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. The Kumbh Mela rotates between these four cities, returning to each roughly every twelve years.

At Prayagraj, crores of devotees bathe at the sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet the unseen Saraswati. Naga sadhus lead the amrit snan, once called the shahi snan or royal bath, and the gathering is counted as the largest peaceful assembly of people on Earth, visible even in satellite photographs.

No invitations are ever sent, yet crores of people arrive on exactly the right tithi, guided by the same panchang this app carries in your pocket. That is the quiet power of Indian faith: one story, one river and one dip binding a whole nation together.
